The village of Great Bookham is located North West of Gatwick airport a distance of 23 miles that would take around 33 minutes by taxi via the M25 and B2122. The village is situated in the county of Surrey and can be located between Leatherhead and Guildford. The Bookhams ' Great and Little Bookham ' are part of the Saxon settlement of Bocham, "the village by the beeches". They are surrounded by common land. Great Bookham is the larger village but Little Bookham houses the railway station.
Whilst once two distinct villages, the Bookhams have long been interconnected with residential roads that give most newcomers the impression that it is in fact one large village. Jane Austen is said to have spent time in Bookham whilst writing several of her novels in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its location is consistent with the geographical details in Emma. C. S. Lewis also studied privately with W. T. Kirkpatrick in Great Bookham between September 1914 and April 1917, and Pink Floyd bass player and singer, Roger Waters, was born in Great Bookham in 1943.
The village is well known as the location of Polesden Lacey, a county house located on the southern edge of the village, surrounded by over 1,000 acres (4.0 km2) of grounds, now owned by the National Trust and open to the public. The property dates back to the 17th century. The village High Street contains 2 independant butchers, a family run fishmongers and two traditional greengrocers, along with the 3 village pubs in close distance (The Anchor, The Royal Oak and The Old Crown). Little Bookham contains One public house, Ye Olde Windsor Castle, which legend has it that King Henry VIII's hunting parties used to pass through Bookham and stop in the Windsor, hence its royal name.
Other attractions close to the village include, Wisely R.H.S Garden, Epsom Downs Racecourse and Denbies Vineyard.
